Current Events

Another new look: The first thing you will notice is that I switched the look of the site. I try from time to time to make the thing more appealing as it’s my home page and I look at it everytime I fire up Firefox. I also upgraded the application that runs this site.

Gary Wilson dies: The first current event is that a sound guy called Gary Wilson died in a motorcycle accident early Wednesday morning … I assume he was driving back from a job Tuesday night. I didn’t know the guy at all but had met him a couple times. The first time I met him was when I was working at The Whiskey Tango. I showed up at my normal time, went into the booth and the PA was already on. (This was before we had a door to lock). So I power up the lighting PC and head to the DJ booth to start powering stuff up and that’s where he met me. “Are you the house guy?” Yes. “I got everything on the stage wired. I’m using my own mics and I tweaked out the monitors. I’m good to go so you can go home.” I said: Hi, my name’s Dave and the walked out of the DJ booth to finish my power up routine. I don’t know that The Whiskey Tango gave their approval for Gary to send me home for the evening? So, that was my first impression of the guy and I didn’t think it was a very good one.

The next time I saw Gary he was once again at The Whiskey Tango. When I arrived he was at his board and a full system was brought in because he was the FOH engineer that was working for Spellcaster doing Octane since their long-time sound company had given notice after 3 years together. When they had originally given noticed, I expressed my interest in the job with Octane. While Octane was weighing all their options with different production companies and doing auditions, Spellcaster was doing their sound. I also assume that Spellcaster also had the option of staying with Octane full-time. I was asked to give my opinion of the night Octane was there because I had sat in the sound booth while Octane performed numerous times when they had come through there before. My curse is that I’m honest. In so many words, I told them that Gary wasn’t doing them justice. Watching the INXS reality show lately, I think the words they use are appropriate. Gary wasn’t right for Octane. In other words, I didn’t say he was bad in order to better my chances, I just told them what I thought. And I swear on my kids lives, I fully expected that evening to have been a night of realization. I expected Octane to come in there with their Spellcaster production and sound just as awesome as ever. I fully expected to tell them that they sounded great and that it probably wasn’t worth me pursuing the position any longer. See, at that time I not only would have to bring my PA out of retirement, but I would also have to purchase a bunch more gear and do a lot of maintenance before I was ready. I fully expected to tell them that they should stick with Spellcaster and I would stick at The Tango. Such wasn’t the case.

The third time I met Gary was just weeks ago at The Ocean Drive. He showed up to mix The Benderz on my system. The Benderz were sharing the main stage with Octane that evening. I had no idea he was coming until he showed up. After the Octane event and me talking with various other people, I didn’t have nice things to say about Gary’s mix of Octane, nor did I have a high opinion of the guy since the first time I met him he told me to go home. So, if he was informed of my comments, he didn’t mention a thing and we both went on with our jobs for the evening. I attempted to accomodate him with whatever he needed and let him do his thing. That was the last time I saw him until I heard about him having the fatal accident. I don’t know what the cause of the accident was, but I assume drinking. I totally could be wrong, and Dave who does lights for Octane said that getting the guy to do a shot with them involved some arm twisting, but this could have been due to him being instructed that he wasn’t allowed to consume alcohol while working for Spellcaster, I don’t know.

Anyway, so my problem here is this; It’s never a pleasant thing to hear about somebody passing away, but it’s especially difficult when you feel for the loss (as I am no stranger to loss) but there is also this guilt that you didn’t like the guy. I guess I will go through this feeling again in time as there certainly are people who I will like and those who I will be indifferent to. Gary was 24 years old. It’s not fair that someone so young should have their life ended for whatever reason. I didn’t even know he was so young. He looked older to me.

I received the email from his company’s CEO and I sent this reply:

Here today, gone tomorrow … Life’s too short … sayings you hear from time to time but don’t realize how pertinent they are until something happens that affects you personally … Who would have thought that someone as young as Gary would be gone tomorrow? I certainly didn’t and have felt uneasy for many reasons since I heard about the accident Wednesday morning. It leaves me confused with reality or at least detached from it in some way for a moment … I think I met him only 3 times … First when he came in the Tango with Zero Cool and told me to go home … Second when he came in the Tango with Octane and lastly when he came to The OD to mix The Benderz … I didn’t know he was only 24 … and as a result of these meetings with him, I certainly didn’t know him at all. I am affected by his accident in a way that someone from “the team” is gone, and that’s never something anyone would ever want to have happen regardless of opinions. I guess there’s something to be said about the guy that he could leave an impression on me just running into him 3 times … I will never forget him but will never have a chance to know him the way others have. Please extend my sympathies however you see fit, to you personally or his family and friends.

Mortal Kombat Deception: This past week before starting the Out On the Town Brian Quinn’s band played at Abilene Monday night. He didn’t call me to mix. He had another guy go to South Carolina with him to do the festival cause I obviously couldn’t do it due to working with Octane. I guess that guy did a fine enough job so that Brian didn’t even contact me to do the Abilene show again. I’ve had mixed feelings about that too. So, rather than go to the show (which I thought I might do) I played Mortal Kombat Deception all night. I played a bit with my kids, and it’s a bit of a bloody game for kids. There are some deathtraps that my son would look away from the screen for, but he’s gotten pretty good at the game. I was almost near the end of the Konquest portion and I was spending a lot of time trying to beat Scorpion. Tanya before that was a pain to konquer as well. I think I beat her that Monday night, and then later in the week is when I sat there and tried to beat Scorpion. I tried several times and gave up to go through Konquest and get more koins to buy things in the krypt. I also found out how to unlock some of the other characters. So this one night, Thursday I think, I am trying to beat Scorpion again. My wife lays on the couch and I guess she fell asleep. You have to beat him 3 times. Sometimes I didn’t even beat him once. When I finally beat him two times, I say to my wife “Did you see that?! I was so close!” and she grunts … ‘Wha?’ … so I give her crap for falling asleep. I keep at it and I finally beat the guy 3 times and when he goes down I yell, “Yeah!” … I woke her up with my yell and she tells me to be quiet. I’m like I beat the guy! The guy I was trying to beat all week, finally I beat him! She’s not impressed. I was then able to go to the certain location to unlock another character after beating Scorpion finishes the Konquest part of the game. The last guy to unlock is Raiden, and you have to beat him in Konquest to do it. He’s very difficult to beat as well and I still haven’t done it.

If you read all of that stuff above about Mortal Kombat, the point of the story is this. My left thumb is killing me. My back hurts, my feet and calves hurt … It was a ball busting weekend with Octane. Little sleep and 3 jobs in 2 days. I stayed at a hotel Friday night into Saturday morning showing up there at about 5am and leaving at 9am. I didn’t sleep well cause I think I was afraid I wouldn’t wake up in time. Then sun all day and I got a bit of a burn. The last time I cut my hair I used a #1 and my scalp got burnt as well … First time that’s ever happened to me … When I scratch my head, it hurts. The Saturday afternoon show ended early enough that I drove the truck to my house and slept for about an hour to an hour and a half … My wife hadn’t expected me until Sunday morning, so she was out shopping. I asked that she wake me in time to go to that evening’s show. I slept better knowing she was going to come wake me up. That night’s show was supposed to be outside, but there was a prediction of rain so we played inside … Hopping out of the truck after parking it for the weekend my feet were killing me … my dogs are screaming … so I hope I will recover by this weekend. No pain, no gain.

Get Firefox, Thunderbird too!

I can’t stress enough the abilities you will discover if you download and use the Firefox web browser … I look at my site here and notice the differences immediately from MSIE … I have learned to respect the RFCs that the Internet was built and wonder why the people writing web browser software over at Microsoft don’t pay attention to them … If they did, and added their proprietary crap on top, their browser would probably dominate … but Firefox is growing steadily running on all platforms and standards compliant … Firefox has tabbed browsing and a lot of nifty configurables for your web browsing pleasure … It also has many plugins that aid in web development as well as enhancements to web browsing …

I have also switched to Thunderbird for my email client … right out of the box my inbox is much safer from external links that are loaded automagically by other MUAs …

New Forum

I have posted a forum application for use here on my site … If you’re interested in starting a little online community, please sign-up for the forums and begin to forge what is ours … The link to the forum is under the links section on the right … I like having web applications such as these, and maybe it will stimulate more of a conversation than what this bLog actually does or doesn’t do …

RSS Feed

The link(s) to the feeds have changed … I believe this is now working properly as per the WordPress way … I think with the prior versions we just made them work as they would … I realized the URL had changed when I checked out the feed through another location … Sorry for any inconvenience …

Busy, busy, busy

… as the magician with the rabbit would say … Happy Birthday! … uhm … well … yeah … I have been really busy lately … Lot of running around … Getting the truck fixed a couple times … finally today (yesterday) for good … but that required some errands that I don’t normally do … A trip to get the number off the side of the master cylinder … A trip to meet a guy there to verify that it was the master cylinder … A trip to put on the part when it came in to find out it wasn’t the right part after all … Then another trip to finally get the right one on …

My father had extreme system slow-down on his machine at his office … Didn’t know why … said everything was slow … After determining that it was just his system, tried to see how the machine itself was running … CPU didn’t look over taxed as well as plenty of memory being free … Hmm … So, I ping the server … time-outs … I ping the gateway … time-outs … Could it be the network card? The snow closed some places, so that day went wasted … The next day the place was closed due to illness so eventually stole a 3Com out of another machine in the office and stuck it in there … Vwahlah! It was the network card …

Development on http://www.lastmanband.com finally completed and launched about 24 hours ago … Everyone is happy … Development on several other sites continue … Some more important than others … Downloaded the database from my father’s web site and removed a ton of comment SPAM … An old ASP site I had done a long time ago … I’m sure it will fill up again … I should rewrite the site …

Watched Catwoman; The Day After Tomorrow; I, Robot; The Girl Next Door and The Village …

I may not have a job on Sundays anymore … the Whiskey Tango is looking to cut costs and if Brian Bortnick doesn’t play there anymore, they’re not going to replace him immediately with anything and they may just end up putting him in the front room like they do for the Monday night acoustic show … That will be a huge monthly pay cut for me … I guess it’s inevitable … unavoidable … a done deal … Brian is seeing if there may be a way to continue to utilize my services … either by helping with the small PA or by running another PA somewhere else should he go somewhere else … I guess I should do whatever comes along …

Cleaned up log files on the Windows servers … If there is more than 250 log files in a directory, the stats program will choke and sometimes cease to process … I thought it errored out, but it seemed like some sites past sites that had too many log files processed further than others … I don’t understand it … But I should switch to something that doesn’t have this restriction so it doesn’t choke … Also, some people are deleting their “/stats” directory, and that will error out as well … I am going to implement something on the FreeBSD side that handles all of this, but wouldn’t you know it again, there’s something that runs more efficiently on FreeBSD than it does on Windows … I hate to keep knocking the platform, but it happens time and time again that there is more efficiency on the FreeBSD side of things using software that costs nothing to procure … I’m sure there is something that has a decent price tag on it for Windows, and someone like me that needs to use it on many domains, there will be additional fees … *sigh* …

I think that brings me to current … I did buy some fabric at the fabric store to make pockets for Octane’s guitar cabinets as well as a cover for the monitor board … The fabric I bought was marine vinyl … Nothing too flowery … Just black …

Oh, and as I click the categories to file this post under (almost all of them) I remember that my Counter-Strike server died … again … This time I don’t really know why … I was getting ready to catch up with the old CS crew, and the guy says, “Is your server down?” … and I’m like I don’t think so, let me check … Sure enough, down … I look at the machine … No power … hmm? I then press the power button, nothing … I turn off the power switch in the back, then press power again … okay .. it’s on .. walk around to the monitor … Nothing again … hmm … same thing again … power off in back, power in front … I watch it .. it stays on .. hmm? Around to front … I see the thing booting and … boom! gone … The thing won’t stay on, so I think power supply? Who knows … I have to replace the thing and see if that does it …

Right next to it is a P3 that was the Windows MySQL server a while back … I finally put a power supply in that and stuck a 160G drive in there … Started to install FreeBSD 5.3 and I get drive errors … hmm? So then I think maybe it’s the version so I burn brand spanking new FreeBSD 4.11 … same sort of thing … hmm? Turns out the drive setting are what’s confusing it … So I go into the BIOS, select USER and it won’t let me specify the HDs Cyls and Tracks like all other BIOSes do … Then I start looking for BIOS upgrades, etc … didn’t find anything promising, so this machine sits … Now with this weird thing going on with the CS Server, I think I will do some swapping out of power supplies and drives and see if I can’t get the faster machine working with the larger drive and throw up another FreeBSD web server … One with quotas, and log management with stats … ooh, I am so excited!

Irony

I just posted a couple days ago, ‘Who reads this stuff’ and I go to Cintioli’s last night, and a guy who works there … I should say, a rat bastard that works there brought to my attention that he saw the post I made about Cintioli here … While he was poking fun with it and adding phrases and obscenities that weren’t in the original post, I found it interesting that he had found it at all … He said he did a search on “Cintioli” and it popped up … So there … there goes the point that I made that these spiders go through and pick up on all this stuff … It also adds to my frustration that people do read things into posts that aren’t there … The inflection factor of The Internet … I’m low key, so just about every post I make here is read in a normal speaking voice … If I want to yell or accentuate something, I have the caps key and punctuation … For whatever reason, I think he found the post to be a negative on Cintioli, and while I guess to a point it was, it was simply my frustration in that it took a long time to get gear … I didn’t think it would take so long … The longest I would have thought anything would have taken was 8 days (ground from CA) … I would have never thought that it would take 3 to 4 months …

To follow up on that post about buying things elsewhere … I didn’t end up getting anything else … Vito, the rat bastard, came through with the mics and effects I was looking for … I didn’t end up getting some of the stuff that was on my list either … and I didn’t pursue it anywhere else … I think I had spent enough money for some time … In fact, now that I am looking to do some simple changes in the system, I went to Cintioli with my inquiries … Last night I picked up the final items of my order that had been backordered … It was just a spare power supply from the tour package and a dust cover for the board … These items hadn’t held me back at all …

After Cintioli, I went to the fabric store and bought three yards of marine vinyl to cover the monitor board with (so new covers for both boards this weekend) … and some elastic for mounting the mics on the guitar cabinets … a hook needle to attach this to the front grill on the cabinets with black upholstery thread … Then new sneakers … Yeah, a couple stops, but it was my night out to tie up a lot of loose ends … More to complete on my todo list …

Who reads this stuff?

I was asked the other day if I knew how many people read my bLog here … I don’t … But I immediately thought I could look at the web logs and see who actually is reading this stuff … Then I thought again, maybe I don’t want to know?

I do know this … it’s spidered … after all, it’s on the ‘net … I know it’s spidered cause I get a bunch of comment spam all the time … So, I know that people that I don’t necessarily want to know of this site’s existence do know … How do they know? Through automated scripts that use those spiders that have an index of me …

I realized the other day when creating the project page that I don’t have my email address on here anywhere … I recall typing ‘contact me at my web site’ and that’s when I realized it … Then I thought, I don’t want to post an email address on the page judging from all the comment spam, I don’t want to introduce another window for spam … spam just sucks …

So, in the end, I probably won’t ever look at the logs cause that takes time … I only know of the people that read this because of the people that told me that they read this … I can only imagine that people here and there drop by because of a search … I do cover a lot of topics here … I have received comments in the past that were valid comments, and I didn’t know the author of those comments … Specifically my post about me not being a trucker, but I drive a truck on the weekends …

I also realize that I type very long posts … I dont try to, it’s just my way … Recently when emailing people from the band, it came to my attention that the length in which I describe something just totally lost them … So I have been working on getting to the point and leaving my actual thoughts out of it … This is difficult, but I guess I have to realize I’m dealing with musicians … Which is tough for me, cause I am a musician myself … So I don’t comprehend it … (Funny, most of the people I went to computer school with were musicians … We could have formed a band … I did in fact get together with one of the guys I went to school with, and we wrote some originals and even put one on a record … AVAP Sampler Volume 2 if you can find it.) …

Anyway … enough about me … let’s talk about my wife … When I was asked who read this bLog, I mentioned that my wife didn’t even read it … and I still don’t think she does … She mentioned that she would … There is a computer available for the family’s use … I have all the switch ports monitored for bandwidth, and I can tell if the thing was used whenever … I once baffled my child in that I told him that he used the computer while I was gone the previous night, and he didn’t know how I knew … Well, that’s how … I don’t look at it all the time … Was just probably something I saw at the time and I mentioned it and it freaked him … cool! .. hehe … It’s good to keep your kids on their toes … and beat them whenever you can (a post from a long time ago) …

So, the reason I post and don’t care about who reads it is that it’s here for me … I can go back on this whenever and see what was going on at whatever time, and what was spewing from my brain at that time … See what crap I was filling my site up with … Interesting to see my change of opinions over time, etc … It’s my vent … It’s where I go to complain or praise something that’s going on at the time … I share it publicly cause someone may benefit from it … Others may just find it a waste of time … Either that, or they will become engrossed in my writings and spend hours making sure they’re up to date on the latest and greatest and monitor for new posts … That would mean that I’m like a rock star … The President … a movie star! Yes! This would be the best thing ever, wouldn’t it? Bah! It’s probably time I stopped typing in here enlarging my ego and started making some money … Back to work …

Eagles lose the Superbowl

Well, they lost. Was I upset? Not really. I would have liked them to win, but I didn’t think they had a bad loss. It’s not like they went to the Superbowl and were spanked … They remained alive until 9 seconds left in the game. They lost by 3 points. To me, that isn’t a bad effort at all. The things I have been hearing bother me though.

Right after the game, I had to leave for work. I didn’t see any press conferences or post-game shows, so I don’t know the extent of everything, just what my wife has been telling me. Seems many people in the city want to blame someone for the loss. If we had won, there would be none of this. She tells me that people are saying Donovan choked, or the coaching was bad. Whatever.

The Eagles broke tons of franchise records this year. They finally got past the NFC championship game and they went to the Superbowl. They also played an exciting Superbowl. They played sloppy, but they also made the other team play sloppy. The other team was able to get it together quicker than the Eagles, but the Eagles weren’t far behind. Again, only 3 points behind. They had the first Superbowl to ever be tied after 3 quarters.

So, I am disappointed that they lost. I am not devastated. I am sorta amazed that anyone could play football in that extremely hyped and show business environment, but both teams are subjected to the two weeks prior to the game with tons of press and all the hooplah of the game itself … So it’s not a cop out. I realize that any given football game will have one of two outcomes. For the Eagles, this Superbowl is chalked up as a loss. A lot of Philadelphians give it the ol’ “We’ll get ’em next year” … but in this case, we certainly can go there again next year.

It’s great to be an Eagles fan. I have seen many great things on my television from the Eagles these past, oh 16 years. Sometimes it’s not great to be part of the group though … I don’t believe that fans can coach, and I don’t believe that they should be upset about the decisions the organization makes … I don’t think someone like Freddy Mitchell is someone to get rid of … I like FredEx, I think he is an asset to the team … While people may say that he had no impact and when he was given a chance he missed the ball. Welp, the missed ball was a bad throw, and the times he was wide open, you didn’t see on your TV screen. That’s why the coaches look at the film after the game … They see these efforts, and see reasons to keep players that may not be favorable in the public eye. You know what I say? Shut up and support your team.

My complaints of the Superbowl were the horrible production. Poor camera cuts and bad timing. On top of that, the sound was horrid. The country act was live vocals going to a track … That could have been mixed better. Black Eyed Peas had live vocals, but Earth Wind and Fire was it? They were lip-synched … Alecia Keys (I don’t know how she spells her name) was completely lip-synched … The National Anthem was lip-synched … and portions of Paul McCartney were lip-synched … McCartney had way better sound though … Made that transition from synch to live very good … I thought the director’s choice of camera angles during the game made it difficult to watch at times … Oh well …

Superbowl

Superbowl Well, today is the day. The Superbowl. The Philadelphia Eagles are in the Superbowl finally. It’s been a fun two weeks. The city has been a happy place. Eveyone is in a good mood. It’s easy for the band to get a crowd response just by asking “Where are the Eagles fans?!” Every night the top story is the Eagles in Jacksonville Florida. All the sports shows are in Jacksonville. Was it always like this, or is it just because I am watching due to my team being in the Superbowl? Hmm, thinking out loud, I guess it’s because it’s the lead on the nightly news, and I flip around to the other channels to see what’s on. I wouldn’t do that normally, so that explains it. Yes, it’s because the Eagles are all over the news. Why? Because the Eagle are in the Superbowl!

Will they win? Who knows? Does it matter? Well, yeah … It would be great to win. If you pay attention to all the reports and the mucky mucks, it sounds like a Patriots win due to their Superbowl experience and their team’s talent. If you listen to the Eagles’ optimists, they say that if they play a perfect game, there’s a possibility … Guess what? I think every game is 50/50 … It’s not a cop-out either … It’s a fact … There are games that you think are definite wins, and it could come out a loss … What a downer … and there are games where you think it could be a close one, and it’s a slaughter … It just proves that you can do all the predicting you want, but what happens in those four quarters you never know …

I think there is momentum … I think it is important to be playing well and have high spirits … As soon as you lose in your mind, you’ve lost the game … They need to be positive throughout … There have been plenty of comeback games in the past, and even if they’re ahead, they need to stay in it as well … I like a coach that will pound the points too … If you’re ahead and you have the chance to score again, do it … No holding back. I don’t think there should be any etiquette in coaches that you won’t cream one another … especially in the Superbowl …

This also has something to do with a new rule I would like to propose … I would like to have the “Okay, you win” rule. Maybe just during the regular season, or maybe all the way through to the Superbowl, but … When a team is up by an astronomical point spread, and it’s an obvious win, the other team ought to be able to throw the “Okay, you win” flag, and then walk off the field … Game over … you obviously beat the hell out of us, and at this point there is nothing we can do to win … This way there wouldn’t be any injuries from the frustrated defense that couldn’t stop the offense all day taking pot shots at offensive players at the end of plays … You see that all the time … They know they’re going to lose, but they have to continue to play …

Anyway, I will probably get sued for this post. The Superbowl committee is very strict on their copyrighted use of the term “Superbowl” … Advertisers aren’t allowed to use the term. Bars aren’t allowed to advertise a “Superbowl Party” … They have to call it “The Big Game” or something … This year, we went balls out … In everything we used the term Superbowl and you hear the term all the time on the radio and TV … I think we decided that the copyright on the term doesn’t apply if your city’s team is actually in the Superbowl … That remains to be seen …

I am optimistic that the Eagles will win. I think they really want to win, and I think they have the mindset to win. I have faith in their coach that he has prepared them to win. I think they have the talent to win. But I know that there’s a chance that they might not win. At this point I don’t know how devastating that would be to me. I am hoping that I won’t know that feeling. I will be watching, and I will be cheering the Eagles on from my living room where they can’t hear me yell, but I most assuredly will yell at people that can’t hear me. I am after all a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Has any one else noticed how many times newscasters refered to Lincoln Financial Field as “The Vet” … and they have already set up the stage for the parade … and I thought I was optimistic … Aparently this game is a gimme …
